Review: Eyewitness USA GuideBook

Travel guides seem to be getting bigger and bigger these days, and the hefty guidebook on the USA from Eyewitness Guides is no exception. It's also one of the heaviest guides I've ever picked up!

One of the things that sets Eyewitness Guides apart from the rest is the amount of photographs and full color maps used throughout. And in a book covering the entire USA, there's plenty to look at. Full page photos, charts, directories, and some very useful maps. The map of the Las Vegas Strip would come in handy when you're trying to find a particular resort, as a small image of each hotel is placed in the right spot. There's also excellent little blurbs like tips for drivers on a scenic route, visitors checklist for many locations, and detailed city information with history, sights and more.

The approach Eyewitness takes to travel advice is quite straightforward and matter-of-fact. If more sass and opinion is what you're after , the Time Out or Frommer's Irreverant Series might be more to your liking. But for a reliable introduction to visiting the USA, you'll enjoy this Eyewitness book a lot. The sheer weight of the guide would make me think twice about travelling with it, but it would definately be part of my 4 or 5 month "pre-trip" planning! New Pages This Month in Excellent Romantic Vacations:

Best Place to Honeymoon
Tofino Resort Vacation
Mayan Riviera All-Inclusive Resort Holiday

Here's the start of our brand new section on Honeymoon destinations. Really, most any place currently on our site could make a great honeymoon trip. But these are places Maureen and I have been to and both agreed have tremendous potential for honeymooners! Tofino is simply one of the most gorgeous, exciting ocean front places we've ever seen. And the Mayan Riviera is Cancun's quiet little secret - amazing white sand beaches just 50 miles down the Caribbean coast.

Coming Next Month

Miami – oops, we promised this one last month. Sorry for the delay. We'll have more on Florida in 30 days. And we certainly hope any of our readers from the Sunshine state are OK after all the hurricaine activity.

5 Questions and Answers About Vancouver

1. Does it really rain as much as they say it does?

If you ask us in November, the answer is...Yes! Winter brings traditionally low cloud and drizzle. But from May to early October, there are many fine, sunny and warm days.

2. Can we see Victoria on a day trip?

Yes, it's one of the most popular day trips from Vancouver. The ferry to Victoria is about a 30 minute drive from Vancouver. The crossing to Vancouver Island takes 1.5 hours. You can enjoy the day in Victoria, and be back in your Vancouver hotel room by 10 PM no problem.

3. When is Whale Watching Season?

The best time is usually April to October. Tours last 4-6 hours, and depart from both Vancouver and nearby Steveston Village in Richmond, B.C.

4. We've only got a day or so before our Alaska cruise. What should we see?

Don't miss a walk or tour through Stanley Park, and the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Gastown is good for souvenirs.

5. How close are the mountains?

In our backyard! North and West Vancouver are situated part way up the north shore mountain range.
