Romantic Scotland

Hiking, Haggis, & Highlands - we're fresh back from 2 fun weeks of touring Scotland!

It was a great adventure with a little bit of everything - historic cities, highlands sightseeing, strolling through centuries-old villages, exploring castles, shopping at markets, and more. I even fulfilled a life-long dream of golfing at St. Andrews! (Maureen stayed back at the shops in town!)

3 highlights to tell you about:

  • One of the most underated spots in Scotland has to be Kintyre - we loved the country near the tiny village of Machrihanish and the glorious views of the sea.
  • Deep in the highlands, Glencoe is a great place for a romantic picnic and hike. It's easy finding a spot to enjoy a lunch and the magnificent views of the Three Sisters Mountains. And in the distance, the sound of bagpipes (it was incredible!) The peaks, waterfalls and meadows make this a truly memorable place.
  • And we discovered the small village of Stein in the northwest of the Isle of Skye. Serene and scenic, with a gorgeous little waterfront inn that's the oldest on the island.

For more details about our Scottish tour, including some links to a couple of cozy little B&B's we enjoyed, watch for our new page on Scotland, coming soon to the Europe section of our site.

Guidebooks on Scotland We Used & Especially Liked:

Rick Steve's Great Britain
(The section on Scotland is rather skimpy, but what he does cover is well written. Especially good for accommodation recommendations)

Lonely Planet Scotland
(It took a while to adjust to their updated layout, but the maps and accurate descriptions of towns and villages were a great aid. Seemed to always be the first guide we pulled out!)

Fodor's See It Scotland
(Used this one quite a bit before we left. Up-to-date, with fascinating portions on pubs, entertainment and shopping)

AAA Spiral Guides-Scotland
(Just a great little manual. Full of tips, alternatives for quiet walks away from the crowds, and some terrific photographs)
