More on Romantic Australia Holidays

Great Barrier Reef – we took a day cruise from Cairns and snorkeled just off Green Island. Unbeatable clear, bathtub warm water, tropical fish everywhere, and amazing colors and shapes of coral. The reef is just amazing.

Great Barrier Reef The beaches on Green Island, and back on the mainland just north of Cairns, are terrific. You might have to swim in netted enclosures during certain times of the year to stay protected from jellyfish stings.

We also went up to the swimming hole at Mossman Gorge - it was an invigorating experience. Hardly anyone there, sun peeking through the rainforest, and a relaxing swim in the rocky cavern!

The Whitsunday Islands are another excellent Australian Great Barrier Reef resort area. It's a real sailing and watersports hub, with different charters out to the reef as well as many of the islands just offshore from Airlie Beach.

Broken Hill, NSW – a long, but unforgettable journey through the outback, starting in Adelaide. Drive northeast for about 7 hours and you’ll find this mining town with its art galleries, Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air. You're in the real outback here! We even went to Silverton, a nearby ghost town, for a visit to the pub, and a camel ride!

Ayers Rock, Australia Ayers Rock – you can visit this huge rock either by flying in from Sydney or Melbourne, or by car/bus from Alice Springs. The days of being able to climb to the top are numbered, as control of the area reverts slowly back to Australia’s Aboriginal population. Fascinating area, many interesting hikes, tours and cultural shows. The night sky here is something else – darker than anywhere else we’ve ever been!

Gold Coast – a bit of Waikiki downunder! Lots of attractions, shows, theme parks, shopping and dining here. The Beaches here are good - miles and miles of sun and sand! Lots of Australia vacation packages include stopovers here.

The Brisbane/Gold Coast area is ideal for some great beach vacations. Just an hour north brings you to Noosa, a very attractive town with all sorts of resorts and hotels, excellent beaches and swimming, and quite a choice of dining and shops.

And if you travel south across the border into New South Wales, don't miss Byron Bay. It's got a terrific coastline with wide, sandy beaches as far as you can see. A drive up to the Lighthouse at Cape Byron will reward you with sweeping views across the coast and the Pacific.

Australia Vacation Information

Seasons: Because Australia is in the southern hemisphere, summer is November to April, and winter is May to October.

Weather: Australian Summers: warm to really, really hot just about everywhere! Coastal areas usually benefit from ocean breeze. Temps can hit 40 C in northern and outback areas!

Winters: comfortably cool down south, pleasantly warm in Queensland. Top End (Darwin) can be hot just about year round. The best time to visit Australia can be any time really, but September - December and March/April are the times Maureen and I usually go.
