A Guide for a Romantic Southern California Beach Vacation

A Southern California Beach Vacation!

The playground known as “southern cal” is home to over 100 miles of beaches. And they’re next to one of the most concentrated areas of accommodation and restaurants anywhere. And attractions! There's Disneyland, Universal Studios, Sea World, and many more.

One of the big advantages here is the weather. A southern California beach vacation will mean sun, and usually lots of it. Areas near the coast are comfortably warm year-round, and the rainfall is limited. You can sunbathe pretty much anytime, and swim in the ocean too (better in the summer though).

The variety of this attractive area means you'll enjoy sunsets, hills, mountain ranges, cliffs, and sandy beaches all in close proximity. There's small and big towns like Santa Barbara, Ventura, Malibu, Los Angeles and San Diego.
This page will look at a few of the possibilities for a romantic California beach vacation in 2 areas: Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Los Angeles

There are some very famous beaches in the greater L.A. area. It’s almost a culture by itself (thanks to Hollywood!). Probably the most visible would be Venice Beach and Malibu. The “California” lifestyle is very much alive here! Pacific Coast Highway, California A nice, scenic, “put the top down” ocean drive is the Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and Zuma Beach (great views).

Venice is a great area during the day for just taking a stroll and watching the people. Just a mile or so north is Santa Monica Beach with it’s famous pier. It's a nice place to eat or relax on the sand.

Following the Pacific Coast Highway south will bring you into Orange County and Huntington Beach. Here you’ll find a wide sandy beach and long pier. This, along with Newport Beach, is well known as surf country USA.

A really nice place for romantic vacations is Laguna Beach. In the LA area, this is a good California beach vacation. You’ll find a quieter, attractive beach, beautiful coves, marine parks, and some good hikes. The area has art galleries, historical and cultural walks, and lots of outdoor activities. There’s also a good variety of Hotels, B&B’s and Inns in Laguna Beach too.

San Diego

The greater San Diego area has some very attractive beaches and beach towns. This is a romantic California beach vacation all by itself! And here you’ll find what many say is the very best weather in the USA!

Romantic Tip: San Diego's a great place to "kick back" and relax. So don't try to cram too much in too short a time. Spend and good part of your romantic vacation near the ocean at a leisurely pace, and you'll both return home with your batteries fully charged!

Sunset, California Beach North of San Diego are the attractive seaside communities of Oceanside and Carlsbad. Here you could have a picnic on the beach or under a palm tree in a nearby park. Or in the evening a romantic stroll on the pier to enjoy the sunset(Check out South Carlsbad State Beach for fewer crowds).

A little further down, Del Mar (sometimes called "Malibu South"!) has a fine beach for sunning, a couple of nice seaside parks and a cool coastal village feel to it.

Snorkel on the Beach In and around San Diego itself, we arrive at La Jolla. Excellent choice of good beaches, scenic coves and cliffs, great restaurants and things to do: Torrey Pines State Beach and La Jolla cove are for swimming and snorkeling, while Black’s Beach and Marine Street Beach are better for surfing.

If you want to cycle, sailboat, sunbathe, have a picnic or rent a surfboard, Mission Bay has a huge area of bike paths, parks and beach.

There’s also good shopping, eating and entertainment nearby.

South near the Mexico border, quiet Imperial Beach has nice sand and two nearby wildlife sanctuaries.

Romantic Tip: A super-romantic blast from the past: Here’s 2 drive-in movie theaters that were still operating at last report: Santee Drive-in at 10990 Woodside ( Northeast part of San Diego), and South Bay Drive-in at 2170 Coronado near Imperial Beach.
