Scenic New Hampshire Drives
Merrimack Valley - This is the area closest to Manchester. There’s some good shopping and the Currier Gallery of Art. A nice tour is just northwest to the pretty roads and settlements around Dunbarton and Bow, NH.
Monadnock Region – Along the western edge of the state, bordering Vermont, lies a beautiful region of picturesque country roads. Start heading west of Manchester on Rte 136. You’ll find a string of attractive villages in the Peterborough – Fitzwilliam – Dublin area. Mt. Monadnock State Park is very close, with a choice of climbing trails to the top.
Continuing west through Keene and follow the Connecticut River north along Routes 12 and 120. Take your time on these rolling, scenic country roads. You’ll end up in Hanover, one of New England’s most beautiful College towns.
Romantic Tip: There are excellent places for canoeing on the river around Walpole and Cornish. Being out on the water on a fine autumn afternoon with the surrounding foliage is something you’ll both remember for a lifetime!
Lake Sunapee Region – Good hiking in this part of the state, and boat tours of one of New Hampshire’s prettiest lakes. You might want to even cycle through some nearby places like New London and Newbury.
White Mountains – In the central north of New Hampshire. Route 302 gently winds it’s way through scenic Crawford Notch State Park. White Mountain National Forest has good camping facilities, and lots of hikes around rivers and gorges. It’s a mosaic of colors not to be missed in October. Good views of Mount Washington too.
