What Happened To Al & Betty’s Romantic Hawaii ?

We received this rather funny comment and pic sent in by Betty & Al from Canada about returning to “romantic Hawaii” after many years and finding it not quite the same!

I have wracked my brain and I can't remember any specific place for romance. It seems anywhere is romantic when you are young and madly in love!

The places where we stayed in Hawaii that we loved are all old and “mildewy” now. Last spring when we were in Maui we went to look at the resort where we stayed the first time we went to Hawaii in 1969 and it was very romantic then; but sadly much of it is run down now and one of the wings had a condemned sign. When we were there originally we ran into a few of the stars from Hawaii Five O enjoying dinner and mai tais so it was a popular spot in those days.

Our favorite place in the Hawaiian Islands is Kailua-Kona (Big Island of Hawaii) but there again, the places we stayed in aren't that hot now. There are some gorgeous new resorts all along the coast north of town but they are a little pricey for us old timers. Great for a romantic evening out though! I have also checked out some B&Bs there and they are excellent.

I'm trying to get Allan to take me to France, so maybe we will find a new place and I can let you know about it.

Betty, I can identify! About 10 years, Maureen and I took our first trip to Hawaii together as a couple. I don’t know what it was, but Honolulu that year just seemed to look so…old! It was like we stepped right into the whole set for Hawaii FIve-O! Of course, a record deluge of rain and a rather cranky rent-a-car didn’t help matters either that time.

We hope you get to France soon, and let us know the mildew situation there!!

Got any favorite romantic vacation stories to share? (even mildewy ones!) We'd love to Hear From You!
