Maureen and I have made several trips here, and we’ve compiled some tips for couples planning a romantic getaway in Melbourne, Australia. There’s so much to see here, and these are just a few of the best attractions for a romantic Melbourne Australia vacation.
The best time to visit Melbourne: November to March for lots of sun, although it can get very warm in December and January. Most romantic hotels in Melbourne need reservations in advance for these months of the high season.
Romantic Things to Do in Melbourne, Australia
Trams: Take a romantic ride on the tracks on one of Melbourne’s many trams. The Circle City Tram is free and has running commentary on history, attractions and famous places of downtown Melbourne.
Even more romantic: The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, a scenic Melbourne dinner tram.
Chocoholic Tours: Melbourne Chocolate Tours have the perfect walk for a romantic weekend in Melbourne! Enjoy a wonderful 2-hour guided tour through some of the best chocolate and desert shops in Melbourne.
Best Places for a Romantic Walk in Melbourne:
- St. Kilda Pier – after coffee in a nearby cafe, one of the most romantic places in Melbourne for couples. And if you’re up for it, a ride for 2 on the ferris wheel at Luna Park.
- Stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens, one of Melbourne’s most beautiful places (and spots for a romantic picnic!)
- Two scenic lookouts in Melbourne: Both the Eureka Tower Skydeck and the Rialto Towers & Observation Deck have awesome views of the downtown and suburbs.
Best Places to Shop in Melbourne: At Queen Victoria Markets, you can spend a fun morning at one of the best places to shop in Melbourne for crafts, funky souvenirs, jewelry and clothing.

Best Melbourne Beaches: Brighton Beach has nice clean sand, good swimming, and a nice view of the city skyline (It’s also where you see those colorful bathing boxes!)
St. Kilda Beach is the place for people watching and is close to some great restaurants and pubs.
Romantic Excursions in Melbourne: the Puffing Billy Railway is Melbourne’s romantic dinner train that meanders through the scenic Ferntree Gully (they can even arrange a unique Dandenong Ranges wedding reception too).
Venice on the Yarra: Set off on a Romantic Gondola Ride in Melbourne, a great idea for your special anniversary or honeymoon (or an ideal place to propose in Melbourne!)
