Susan Hughes' Report on the Romantic Oregon Coast

Custom Search

Lots of travellers make their way to the romantic Oregon coast and it's incredible scenery. We've received this interesting review of Cannon Beach, Oregon from one of our readers, Susan Hughes, describing her family's recent journey down US Hwy 101...

Visitors seem to most often stop in at Seaside, Oregon, a small town on the west coast of the State. While charming and quaint shops line the main street, complete with the scent of freshly baked cinnamon buns and flags waving in front of doorways, there seems to be some oddity as to why all the tourists have flocked to this small village, when another small community - a mere 20 minutes farther south along the coast - is certainly one of the most romantic places in Oregon...

Cannon Beach

When you step foot onto the main street of Cannon Beach, you get almost an overwhelming feeling that this place has been encapsulated -- separated from the rest of the world. The feeling is almost fairy-tale. A wooden boardwalk lines the shops along the main street. There's the bank, the butcher, the pharmacy, the grocery store, the family-run pizzaria, the tea house, the doctor, the optometrist, the florist, and the list goes on. One of each.

Scattered within the usual amenities, you find local artisans in small, narrow shops tempting visitors with the pastels of oceanic landscapes and canvasses of haunting morning fog that rises every morning on this coast. And it is this coast, and its beach, that tells you why you need to be here.

Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach

Haystack Rock is one of the most famous monoliths on the Pacific Coast. There are no other rock rivals, in my opinion. And there is no rival scenery. This is where the world stops, the beach starts and the ocean rests. THE most romantic beach in Oregon and North America exists here...

Here, on Cannon Beach, you cannot help but grab your lovers hand and walk the sand as the slow, hypnotic tide rolls in and rolls out, taking away every bit of angst you may carry. The beach stretches for miles and miles and the sand is endless. Dotting the skyscape along the beach for as far as you can see, are kites. It is apparent that you cannot come to this beach without a kite. Picking one up in the village is as easy and plentiful as picking up a quart of milk. This is a veritable kite paradise. You can run for miles along the beach towards that magnificent Haystack Rock, without a soul or object getting in your way.

Spread out a picnic in front of the tall, soft blowing grasses that dot the sand line, for you will not want to leave this scene. When the round, orange, glowing pacific sun yields to evening, you are then ready to pack up, and head back. You easily connect back onto a sleeping residential street lined with summer cottages and simple homes with freshly painted fences.

Cannon Beach Restaurants and Inns

While in Cannon Beach, it is easy to find romantic Oregon coast rentals, cozy cottages and inns located along the road overlooking the beach or tucked up nicely in the hills overlooking the seascape.

And Cannon Beach would simply not be complete without a sampling of the seafood. Just slightly south of Cannon Beach, along the secondary road, you will find some of the coziest, five-star inns and restaurants the Pacific coast has to offer.
