We Travel the Romantic Road in Germany
Travel Tips for Couples on the Romantic Road in Germany, including Scenic Routes, Distances, and Romantic Hotels.
On our romantic vacation in Germany, we did our own self-drive tour of a part of Germany’s Romantic Road.
This popular route takes you on a journey takes you through a variety of landscapes, from the gentle rolling hills of central Germany through to the majestic Bavarian Alps in southern Germany.
The road journey is interesting, but the biggest attraction of the Romantic Road is experiencing the small villages and towns along the way like Rothenburg and Fussen. You can:
- walk on medieval walls and explore castles
- stay in cozy inns and small hotels
- enjoy local beer or wine with your dinner in a romantic restaurant
The Romantic Road ("Romantische Strasse" on German road signs) can make a great daytrip, weekend or 4-6 day holiday, depending on your itinerary. Here’s just a few highlights of our German Romantic Road tour...
Romantic Road in Germany - Scenic Towns
Rothenburg ob der Tauber – one of the most romantic places on the Romantic Road! This medieval walled town has postcard-perfect narrow cobblestone lanes, charming buildings, and all sorts of shopping for souvenirs of Germany.
Other attractions in Rothenburg include the Night Watchman's Tour, walking the city walls, and the fine choice of romantic restaurants and places to eat too (pop into a bakery and try a “Schneeballen” – a delicious local specialty!)
We recommend a night or two in one of Rothenburg's romantic hotels (see below) which will allow you to escape the summer tour bus crowds and see this medieval city at the best time: in the evening.
Dinkelsbuhl – a smaller, quieter version of Rothenburg, and a worthwhile stop especially if you are renting a car and driving the Romantic Road on your own.
Fussen – if you’re traveling to southern Germany, you’ll find Fussen, a bustling little village full of shops, cafes and tourist information. There's lot's of options for accommodation and tours around Bavaria from here.
And the distance from Fussen to Neuschwanstein Castle is only 3 miles…
Neuschwanstein Castle - perched deep in a fairy tale Bavarian setting, Ludwig’s famous castle will add romance to any German honeymoon or romantic vacation. Walking the trails through the woods and over the foot bridge above the gorge provide splendid views of the castle.

Guided castle tours are available, and the best time of year to visit Neuschwanstein Castle would be the months of May and October.
Romantic Road Hotels
Treff Hotel Luitpoldpark - a fine romantic hotel in Fussen, offering a choice of standard accommodation or a honeymoon suite. For a taste of luxury, try the romance package which includes a welcome cocktail, spa treatment and romantic dinner.
Hotel Hornburg – a fine choice for romantic lodging in Rothenburg just outside the city walls. This rustic B&B offers very clean rooms, well-equipped bathrooms, a great breakfast and very friendly innkeepers.
Outside the inn you'll enjoy the nicely kept gardens, and free overnight parking is just a short walk away.
Gasthof Goldenes Lamm - this romantic Dinkelsbuhl inn comes with a rooftop terrace for relaxing, comfortable rooms and guest parking.
Romantic Road Route Distances
If you're driving or taking the bus in Germany, here's a look at kilometer distance and mileage on the Romantic Road:
- distance from Frankfurt to Rothenburg: 200 km (125 miles)
- distance from Rothenburg to Fussen: 300 km (188 miles)
