Plan a Romantic Vacation in Germany
Ideas for Romantic Vacation in Germany – Honeymoon Hotels, Rhine River Cruises, the Romantic Road, and more.

Many honeymoons in Europe include romantic Germany. Its landscape, medieval towns and castles, and excellent accommodation make it one of the best countries in Europe for a romantic break.
Let’s take a closer look at some attractions in just a few of the most romantic places in Germany ideal for couples on a holiday in Europe.
Romantic Rhine River Cruise
Castles, vineyards, quaint villages - just some reasons why you should include a Rhine Valley cruise on your vacation or honeymoon in Germany!
You can cruise the Rhine in Germany from Cologne to Mainz on several different cruiselines.
Several cruiselines offer 3, 4 and 5 day Rhine cruises. Or you can:
- buy full and half-day Rhine River cruises
- go for the cheap deal of just cruising between towns of your choice.
We went with Rick Steeve’s tip and got return tickets on the KD line between St. Goar and Bacharach (one of the most scenic parts of the Rhine Valley). The price was a bargain - just 12 Euros return per person! The boats have open decks and even serve beer and wine.
Romantic Rhine Valley Villages – the best small towns along the Rhine River we saw were St. Goar, Bacharac, Oberwesel and Boppard.
One really romantic place along the Rhine River: in Bacharac, along the waterfront, we found a nice park great for relaxing in the sun and watching the boats go by.
The Romantic Road
The Romantic Road is a wonderful route that winds it's way through central and southern Germany. The landscapes, towns and villages, hotels and sights all make it one of the best road trips in Europe for couples.
This is a "must-see" part of a romantic vacation in Germany, and we have a special page on this scenic drive you can visit at Romantic Road in Germany.
Bavaria
Bavaria is famous for being one of the most scenic places in Germany. Flower-filled window boxes, romantic castles and the gorgeous German Alps set the scene for holidays in this attractive part of Europe.
The town of Fussen is at the end of a very scenic drive from Munich on the Romantic Road. Tourists flock here in summer, and it's close to the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein Castle.
Munich - check out the shops and cafes in Marienplatz. Don't miss the Viktualien Markets with an outstanding selection of German foods, including bratwurst. Or chug on a huge beer (and eat an even bigger pretzel!) in the Hofbrauhaus Beer Hall.
Romantic Hotels in Germany
Hotel Hornburg – if you're looking for a small hotel on the Romantic Road in Germany, you'll love the Hotel Hornburg in medieval Rothenburg.
The inn offers a delicious breakfast (one of the best we had in Germany!), free parking, spotlessly quaint and comfortable rooms, and very friendly owners.
The Hornburg's location is just outside Rothenburg's city walls (a short 5 minute walk to the town center).
Castle Hotel Auf Schoenburg - spend some wonderful honeymoon nights in this romantic German Castle hotel overlooking the Rhine River in Oberwesel. Rooms have four-poster beds and river view balconies, with Rhine cruises just 1 Km away.
Honeymoon Packages in Germany
The Hotel Rubezahl - This romantic hotel in Bavaria has a 4 night honeymoon package that includes accommodation in a deluxe suite or room with canopy bed, whirlpool tub, 5-course candlelight dinner and a massage for two.
Castle Schwalenberg - Imagine a European honeymoon in a romantic and Medieval German castle! The Castle Schwalenberg offers weekend getaway and honeymoon packages in suites with a canopy bed. Packages include champagne and gourmet meals.
Travel Tips for a Romantic Germany Getaway
Flights to Germany - The biggest airports in Germany for international flights are Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. Lufthansa, United, Delta Airlines, US Airways, Continental, Northwest and American Airlines all fly to Germany from the U.S.
From Canada, Air Canada has flights to Frankfurt from Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. And Lufthansa operates daily flights from Vancouver to Frankfurt.
Driving in Germany: We drove a rental car for our German vacation. The roads are excellent and free of tolls, and freeway exits are clearly marked. Just remember: the fast lane (far left side) on the autobahn in Germany is for very fast traffic (BMW's flying by up to 200 km/h!)
Approximate Driving Distances to the Rhine Valley:
- Distance from Frankfurt to the Rhine: 70 km (43 miles)
- Distance from Munich to the Rhine: 425 km (265 miles)
- Distance from Berlin to the Rhine: 600 km (373 miles)
- Distance from Amsterdam to the Rhine: 400 km (250 miles)
