Our Romantic Vacation in Scotland

What to See on a Romantic Vacation in Scotland - Edinburgh, Scenic Spots in the Highlands, and Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

Castles, Whisky, Haggis and the Highlands! Maureen and I had a great "self drive" Scotland holiday.

Our Romantic Vacation in Scotland includes attractions in Scotland romantic travellers would enjoy. We'll also mention some very romantic bed and breakfasts in Scotland we discovered.

The best time to visit Scotland: May to October is likely the best weather. Like the rest of the UK, you can expect rain anytime, so pack an umbrella or stay within sight of a pub (not that hard to do!)

Edinburgh

We loved Edinburgh - it's an attractive, captivating city from every angle. Edinburgh Castle is reason enough to visit, and give yourself several hours to explore, take the guided tours and really appreciate the history of it all. The Royal Mile and Princes Street are great walks, with plenty of restaurants, shops and places to load up on kilts and whisky!

We stayed at the Aonach Mor Guest House , a romantic Bed and Breakfast in Edinburgh only 10 minutes from downtown by bus. Ross & Kathleen run a great little B&B, with the best breakfasts anywhere in Scotland! They have plans for a honeymoon style suite next year. Highly recommended.

Romantic Highlands Highlights

No romantic vacation in Scotland is complete without the Highlands. Dramatic peaks, picturesque meadows, streams and scenic trails await...

Glencoe Village has a visitor center with all sorts of info and displays on the area and it's history. If you're sightseeing in Fort William be sure to check out the West Highland Museum and the Ben Nevis Distillery.

Outdoor pursuits in the Highlands that active couples will enjoy:

  • Exploring Castles (we saw four, and liked Carnasserie & Eilean Donan Castle the best)
  • Highlands Boat Cruises - Loch Shiel & Loch Ness for scenic views, history & wildlife
  • Scenic Drives - the Road to the Isles (A830) from Ft. William to Mallaig is memorable
  • Walking through Picturesque Villages (Plockton & Loch Carron are gorgeous!)
  • Scenic Hikes (lots of possibilities just east of Glencoe on the A82)

Romantic Highland Accommodation: Our choice of guest house in the Highlands was the Westhaven , one of the most romantic bed and breakfasts in Fort William, Scotland (Rose even made us haggis for breakfast, delicious!) And for a cozy bed and breakfast in Inverness Scotland, we loved the Ryeford B&B for it's 4 Star comforts and quiet but great location just steps from downtown Inverness.

Romantic Restaurants in Scotland: We enjoyed a fun dinner & Scottish music and dance show at McTavish's Kitchen in Ft. William. And we found a really romantic restaurant in Inverness called Cafe 1 (75 Castle St.) with candles, great service and terrific Highland lamb.

How far are the Highlands from Edinburgh and Glasgow? Quite close actually. The distance from Edinburgh to Glencoe in the heart of the Highlands is 110 km (68 miles). And from Glasgow to Glencoe, just 95 km (59 miles).

Romantic Vacation in Scotland - Skye & Arran

The Isle of Skye gives you a taste of the wild and remote "Islands of the Highlands". Dramatic scenery, expansive views of the Atlantic, and some seaside villages immersed in centuries-old gaelic culture.

Certainly one of the most secluded and romantic retreats in Scotland has to be the Stein Inn on the Waternish Penninsula. This Old Country Inn with it's cozy fireside pub and peaceful waterfront setting would be the perfect honeymoon hotel in Scotland.

The ferry to Arran is a short distance from the Scottish mainland, and makes a great day trip from Glasgow. We found the east and south coast of the Isle of Arran particularly attractive, with green rolling hills, sheep and the ocean around every (narrow!) corner.

Our Arran getaway included a great picnic lunch by the sea at Lamlash, and a fun round of waterfront mini-golf in Whitling Bay.

St. Andrews

The home of golf! Many golf vacations in Scotland feature St. Andrews, and it's a fine stop on a romantic vacation in Scotland too. I fullfilled a lifelong dream and hit the links on one of the "easier" courses here while Maureen explored downtown St. Andrews - both an easy walk from each other!

Traveling to Scotland

Glasgow and Edinburgh are the 2 major air gateways in Scotland. You can fly into them from many different points in North America and Europe.

Also, there are many Flights to Scotland from London Heathrow, with British Airways and BMI flying to Edinburgh and Glasgow every couple of hours.
