Reviews and Ratings of Popular Travel Guides

Travel Guides Reviewed - Don’t Leave Home Without One!

Travel guides can really make a difference on romantic vacations, or any vacation.

A good guidebook can be used both before you go and while you’re away. Here's some advantages:

  • You can research beforehand and narrow down the places where you want to spend more time.
  • They will also give you a better idea of total time and distances involved.
  • Assist you with hotels, eating and transportation
  • Help calculate costs
  • Advice on weather, driving and local customs

And when you’ve returned home, they’re a great souvenir of your getaway and the places you’ve been!

When you go to the travel section of your favorite bookstore, a maze of different travel guides will all be fighting for your attention, and your dollars. What’s the difference? Each brand has its strong points, and since we’ve had the chance to use quite a few over the last 10 years, we thought we’d present this page of travel guidebook reviews.

Lonely Planet Travel Guides

Around since the 70’s, Lonely Planet started off as the backpacker’s Bible to Southeast Asia. Many years and many destinations later, they cover the globe with their titles. And everyone from honeymooners to hippies will find useful recommendations. We use LP guides all the time...

Rating: Very good mix of directions, photos, maps, history, eating and accommodation listings.

Frommer’s Travel Guides

Frommer's Guidebooks were started by renowned travel writer Arthur Frommer. Very sensible, middle of the road guides. Appeal to a variety of budgets. Wide range of titles too, from the famous “dollar a day” guides to special interest titles, driving guides, and more.

Rating: Less emphasis on maps and photos, but usually excellent accommodation listings. Very interesting “Best Of” sections.

Fodor’s Travel Guides

Fodor's Travel Guides include comprehensive coverage of places, drives, restaurants, and hotels/resorts. Few maps and photos. Lots of suggested itineraries walks, and outdoor activities. Diversifying into guides for Family and Budget travel. Also have city guides and road travel books.

Rating: Mainline Gold guides probably suited more to the sophisticated traveler with a bigger holiday budget. Content and writing style well done.

Rick Steves Travel Guides

Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door guides are well known and very effective at what they offer: Just the best parts of a selected area, packaged into a more compact book. Packed with mid-range listings and suggestions for travelers with limited time.

Rating: Writes travel guides for Europe only, but an excellent choice for those countries. With us every time we travel to Europe...

Hope This Helps You in Selecting Travel Guides for Your Romantic Travel!
