Helping You Plan Your Air Travel to Australia
When you decide you want to travel to Australia, you most likely have at least 1 long flight ahead of you! That’s because of Australia’s location in the world – “down under”, tucked away in the corner of the South Pacific.
Flights to Australia are some of the longest flight routings in the world! Still, it’s surprising how quick the journey can go by after 3 movies, 3 meals and a snooze for a few hours.
After making several trips to Australia, we've managed to put together some pointers for making the journey go a bit smoother. Let's look at those, and then some flight routings and options for traveling to Australia.
Making Air Travel to Australia Easier
From our own experiences, we've put together some tips on making air travel to Australia a little more easy...
During The Flight:
- wear loose, comfortable clothing
- drink plenty of water, don’t eat too much
- keep alcohol consumption to a minimum, if at all
- stay limber - get up and walk around the aircraft every couple hours
- do some stretches/head exercises right in your seat!
Jet Lag:
There’s no magic cure for jet lag on air travel to Australia. Here’s what Maureen and I do when crossing time zones:
Travelling East – Australia to Canada/USA, or Europe/U.K. to Australia:
This one is tough. The problem is that, after arriving, you have trouble trying to fall asleep (at midnight or 1 AM!), but then you’re too tired to get up at even 9AM! What helps: going to bed earlier before you fly. Upon arrival, try to get in the local time mode ASAP. Have breakfast even if you’re not hungry, and so on. Mornings are the hardest part, and you’ll probably find as the day goes on, you’ll feel better.
Travelling West – Travel to Sydney Australia from Canada or the USA, or from Australia to Europe/U.K.:
The easier of the two! If possible, for the last 3 or 4 days leading up to your flight, try to stay up later than usual each night. And then sleep a little later than usual the next morning. That way, when you arrive, your body clock is a little closer to the local time. You’ll find that you’ll get tired around dinner time, but it’s not too difficult to stay awake a few more hours till around 9 or 10 PM. Also, try to resist taking an afternoon nap – this only prolongs your adjustment period.
