Romantic Travel Terms Explained: Villa
Villa: also called condo, vacation home, vacation rental.
One dictionary description is a "country residence of a wealthy person". In reality though a villa can be rather hard to define! Especially in the USA, it can mean virtually the same as vacation rental, vacation condo or vacation home.
For romantic travel purposes, it's basically a dwelling (quite often “detached” or bungalow style), very similar to a vacation home or rental in the USA. They often have full kitchen facilities, several bedrooms, and amenities like TV, stereo, barbeque, patio, and access to swimming pool and sauna/Jacuzzi facilities.
They are usually rented with a minimum stay requirement of 3 or 7 nights.
Other advantages of villa rental include:
- In many cases you are renting directly from the owner, which means no travel agent commission.
- Villas usually offer even more privacy than a hotel or resort.
- Most offer full laundry facilities, an important feature especially for longer vacations.
We once had the opportunity to view some luxury honeymoon villas in Hawaii, and they were just beautiful. And the weekly rates were very comparable to a 4 star hotel.
Villas are also very popular in the Caribbean, and in European countries like Italy, Spain, and Greece.
